I presume they are referring to the total energy consumed in a year- even then I find it fairly unlikely unless you only use the microwave once a week. Still, the mains switch for mine is very easily accesible so I guess I might as well turn it off:).0 -
They are referring to the total energy consumed over any representative average period of time - which will be a lot less than a year, in fact may simply be 24 hours. The point still stands though.
You find it unlikely? OK, let's assume you use the microwave for 4 minutes (of 60 seconds) per day on full power, which I don't think is unreasonable. Let's assume that it consumes 1kW - yes, it may have, say, 800W output but there are inefficiencies in the production of microwave energy. The inefficiencies help your case!
Total energy used per day while operating = 1000 x 4 x 60 = 240kJ.
Now let's assume that it takes 5W in standby, as a guess. It's taking 5W for as near as damnit 24 hours of the day.
Total energy used per day while in standby =~ 5 x 24 x 60 x 60 = 432kJ
I rest my case.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0 -

I did that recently and my microwave stopped working, so had to buy another oneYou'll Never Be Rich Working for Someone Else0 -
And switching it off at the wall was definitely the cause of failure? A microwave that can't cope with power cuts? Or being moved?Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
