Rosetta stone for Latin?

My son needs to learn a bit of basic Latin as he is studying classics at uni. He saw the advert for Rosetta stone on the TV but before we rush off and spend oodles of money I thought it best to ask if anyone has used them and if so what was the software like.
If not, can anyone recommend software or anything that would be suitable for learning basic Latin?

As you say, Rosetta offer Latin as a course - and knowing them, it is likely to be a great course. But, you might want to consider looking at this online book in amongst your other research. It was written 100 years ago (!), but is designed for the utter beginner and starts right at first principles.
It is available for free as a 352 page pdf here:

(I can't post direct links, but hopefully you can work it out!)
