    Hi
My hubby is a Roll Turner for a Steel works. He has been there 30 years- since the day he left school at 16!!!
He is on 28K gross which i think is rubbish considering the amount of time he has been there and the unsociable hours he works- not to mention the amount of hard work he puts in!!!!
But hey, Roll Turning is a dying trade and he wouldnt get that pay anywhere else unless he was qualified!
He wanted to do his A levels and Uni but his parents insisted he got a job to help out!! I take my hat off to him- 30 years in the same job is pretty good!!!!

I run my own business from home selling health products. I start it as a part-time thing but now it's really taken off I'm doing it full time. I love it bcoz it offers me the flexibility to work how and when I like. If you are looking for some extra money it's a good way of earning in your spare time
    YAY!!! Self-employed & working-from-home :T

I'm a Homelessness Officer with the local authority. Basically I interview homeless people, carry out investigations into their eligibility, whether they are actually homeless and if they have made themselves homeless intentionally. I make referrals to various support agencies, place people in temporary accommodation and assist them in rehousing. We have to do everything to the letter as we can be sued at the drop of a hat for making incorrect decisions on peoples cases. I deal with a wide variety of people on a daily basis. People with mental health issues (schizoprenia, drug induced psychosis etc), domestic violence cases, drug and alcohol abusers, prison releases, family breakdowns, former asylum seekers, immigration etc. In can be very challenging and stressful, you have to be able to leave your work at home, if you end up dwelling too much on what you have seen it can really screw you up. I currently specialise in prostitution and feel very saddened at so many of the young women's stories. I have had a computer chucked at me when I was 8 months pregnant, threatened with a knife, been out and checked furniture and properties for needles and other drug paraphenalia (they hide stuff in the most dangerous of places and will intentionally stick used needles into the underside of stair bannisters and upturned in carpets).

I currently earn £788 before tax etc per 4 weeks. This is for an 18.5 hour week. I get left with £409 per month once Tax, NI, Pension and childcare vouchers have been deducted. I think it is a reasonable wage for the job I do and I know is pretty well paid in London (with 1-2yrs experience, current salaries are £27-28,000).

  • On the plus side - is he happy? No he's a miserable sod
Mainly because he wants more - admitted he couldn't bear to look at Sunday Times Rich list because James Dyson has done so well for 'just selling vacuum cleaners'
The more you earn, the more you expect. My ex was like that. No matter how much I earned, it was never enough. I thought I was doing pretty well when at the age of 25 I was earning £21k a year + car. But it wasn't enough to buy her a house as good as her friend. Four years later I was earning £38k a year, we'd just moved into a 4 bed house in a nice area, with 2 young kids and she had the choice not to work. Still that wasn't good enough cos a couple of our friends were doing better. I refused to buy a BIGGER house a year after we'd just moved and take on a mortgage that would have stretched us to breaking point.

The thing I've learned and I hope my ex has too by now is the grass is always greener. There'll always be someone doing better than you. There's no point in getting jealous about it.
  • I have a clerical job with the local council, can't get a better job without more qualifications and my boss has been dragging his heels for well over a year now about letting me sign up to do a vocational one which the council pays for (because I'm in so much debt can't afford to pay for a course myself!) I currently earn just over 12k and will need to work for another 5 years before I get to the top of the salary scale for my post!

Oh and I should also say, where the job title says "clerical" read "general dogsbody that carries out tasks that other colleagues believe are beneath them"! ;)

Oh well at least now I've found you guys :D
