Hi, A bit of help needed :)

I am currently at University studying Fine Art, and am just coming to the end of my first year

I love art, and would love to do it full time, but I have, for a long time, seriously thought about teaching.

I have been researching for the past few weeks - what I would need to get onto a PGCE course and so forth. I have applied to take part in a Student Associates Scheme and am planning to work alongside children in any holidays I have.

My main concern is that Art isn't a 'core' subject and I am concerned about my chances of being accepted onto a teacher training course.

I think I am just asking for people's experience of gaining entry onto the course from different degree subjects and whether there is anything else I should be doing.

Thanks.

Are you planning to teach Art at secondary level or are you thinking of primary? Do you have the required GCSEs?

Regardless of the answers, you're doing the right thing by getting as much relevant experience as possible whilst at university.

I was looking more towards primary teaching but I am keeping as many options open as possible as I only have experience of working in a primary school.

I have As in English and Maths and Bs in Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

Are you doing a BA? or foundation.
If you take your masters you can go on to teach in uni.
If you planning on teaching in secondary school, it better if you have 2 subjects.

I'm on an BA course currently.

From experience I currently had, I would prefer to work with younger children. But as I say, this could all change, I'm just trying to think about it all before I finish my degree and don't know where to turn.

The advisors at your uni should be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck.
