Some advise please!

Been working for a company for just over 2 years <extra content deleted as not needed>

Last March I had my appraisal in which my job was disused and agreed that “no changes to be made” to my job at the moment.... <extra contend deleted as not needed>

However today, I have just been handed a new job description. Most of it is just re-worded to included finer details of what I already do, however 3 points stand out

1. Be contactable outside of hours
2. Check the server monitoring system over weekend and notify as required
3. Overall responsibility on H&S – and i quote “To ensure that H&S laws are adhered to at all times”
Now 1 and 2 were already in my last job description – although i just didn’t notice them. Im not fussed about 1, but number 2 i really do not like.

And number 3 – i have no past experience or training with this particular job. Do I need any sort of training to take on this responsibility, and what would happen if something should happen that I should have checked, but due to lack of training didn’t know...... if that makes sense?!

Any advice would be welcome. I have not signed the new job description yet

Have you asked for (or been offered) training in the H&S area?

Been working for a company for just over 2 years, started off on 17k, then 20.5 and now on 21.6k
Last March I had my appraisal in which my job was disused and agreed that “no changes to be made” to my job at the moment.... he offered a £1000 increase to my wage (from 20.5 to 21.5) – and after the hard slog i put in with the company last year – working out of hours, creating new systems I discussed the possibility of a higher increase. This was met with a £100 on top of what was already offered. Not happy but at least I still had a job, with a company car that I can use for personal mileage.

However today, I have just been handed a new job description. Most of it is just re-worded to included finer details of what I already do, however 3 points stand out

And number 3 – i have no past experience or training with this particular job. I am not happy on taking it on either without having a decent pay rise for this year ( have around 23.5k in mind at the moment....). Do I need any sort of training to take on this responsibility, and what would happen if something should happen that I should have checked, but due to lack of training didn’t know...... if that makes sense?!

Wish I had gotten so many pay rises in 2 years! Pah! I work hard too, but in this current climate people are lucky to get any rise.

Have you discussed with your boss?
Is a sufferer of SAD, so don't blame me, blame the depressing English weather!!!

  • You can't moan about things that were there but you hadnt read.

Number three sounds very general and every employee is responsible for health and safety anyway. ask for some training

Overall a job description is open to change and unless you want to create a fuss and make your job risky then I suggest you accept and be happy you have a good steady job with reasonable salary and car. I bet thousands would jump at it if you dont want it.

You need to clarify the role and expectations - are you going to be the person in the dock following a prosecution for something? You should maybe have a NEBOSH diploma at least for this sort of level but this is not for a novice.
A more basic qualification for someone with no H&S experience would be NEBOSH General certificate.

So do they provide you with a laptop and internet connection when you are at home and a netbook or iPhone or similar mobile internet device for if you decide to go away for the weekend? If they do then it doesn't sound a big deal as presumably you just have to log on to the server status page a couple of times a day or keep an eye out for a status email. If they don't then tell them you don't have the tools to do this, you should be able to blag at least a Blackberry out of it :)

To be honest you should be luck you have a job. Go read some of the other threads on here and be grateful you can pay your way and have little to worry about.

I really wish people would stop saying "you're lucky to have a job" when somebody complains about an employer asking them to bend over backwards to meet the companies request(s). Its just so damned irritating. Yes we are in a recession and yes there are few jobs. But that doesn't mean those who are working should be treated badly/expected to work for free/ without the proper training etc. This is coming form someone who is unemployed by the way.

    /Rant over, thanks for reading.

they provide a mobile + data connection however need a PC to connect to the monitoring software...

the big deal is if that clause is in my job desc and if something happens over the weekend and i dont spot it - its amunition to potential get rid... I would also technicly be working 7 days a week! I also do not want to spent "MY" time away from work... doing work... on the odd occasion I am willing to do a bit extra every now and then as a favor - but not as part of my "mon - Fri" job!

    Thank you :)

I do know that it is difficult for some people who have not had very much luck - however I am having to look out for my own job future as well - IE if i sign this new document which tells me i am now responsible for H&S and something happens - instead of the company getting the blaim - it would be me - which again is an easy way out for the company - get rid of me instead of having the place shut down - so although I am lucky to have a job at this moment in time... if i just sign this document then it could be an easy way to get rid of me or to blaim something on me!

    H&S.

I would counter with "I will need training and whats my budget for getting stuff done, I don't what to keep getting approval for spends".

I am sure you will be able to find loads of things to spend money on.

I would also want time allocated to do H&S work and a monthly meeting with managment to go over isssues and for you to document evidence of doing the job, once on top off all the issues these mettings can become less regular or just very short.

As for on call 24/7 have a read of the working time directive and minimum time off requirements.
