Capital One 'gone mad'

I am desperately seeking some advise. I had a cc with Capital One which I cut up and send them back in 2007 for the following reasons.

I became unemployed and missed one payment. They then added charges and pushed me over the measley £200 limit which I had that then resulted in penalties being added as I went over the limit. I had been having discussions with them regarding the fact that I was going to the bank, making payments and the payments reaching them within 5 working days which was causing me major problems. Everytime I phone them and spoke to them they were not willing to help, to stupid, did not understand English, but whatever the reason I paid the card of and cut it up and sent it back to them. Problem gone or so I thought. Since then I have moved home, become debt free and lo and behold I get a letter in March from a company called Cap Quest who has now taken over the debt from Capital One! When I cut the card up in 2007 and did not hear from them again I thought well that is done, not realising that they have added interest and charges until January 2009! Now the Company Cap Quest is harrasing me, threatening me and although I have written to them and Capital One nobody seems to understand that I do not owe them this money. The amount spent was £1622 an the amount paid was £1606, I added the interest during the 2006 and 2007 which amounted to £806 and was paid. I am very worried as I owne nothing, am nobody, rent a room in a household, have no savings, have no pension, only own a little car which I maintain but yet they are threatening to send the sherriffs office around for money which I do not owe them. I have now complained to the Ombudsman but am afraid that they will not help me. Can anybody give som advise please???????
