When are defaults wiped out?

I have a large default which is being managed by a debt management agency ( but not an IVA ). I went into the agreement 5 years ago.
Will the default be wiped 6 years after it actually defaulted or 6 years after the account is actually settled ?
I don't if I should enter a IVA or carry on as I am and the answer to the above will help to decide. Thanks.
