Halifax's difference in failed DD charges!

Hi :)

My m8 today was saying he got a charge on his Halifax basic bank account for a failed direct debit of £15.

I have the Halifax Ultimate Reward account and I get charged £35 if I failed a direct debit.

What I can't understand is why the difference of £20?

Can't be he's got a basic bank account and I have a full bank account as what they do is the same regardless, they don't do anything different special like courier deliver a notice to me and surface mail to inform him.

Is this not a clear case of profiteering on bank charges?

Or a clear case of being more generous to customer using their "social banking" account.

Perhaps you should change to a 'Reward' account where you get charged nothing for a failed direct debit.

Different accounts have a different charging structure.

£15 does seem really low! Sounds a good deal to me. The Reward account is fine as long as you don't use the overdraft as it's a pound each day you are overdrawn. Think it's the biggest mistake the Halifax has ever done. I just don't use the account now but pay in then immediately withdraw £1000 a month a get the £5 reward! They pay me £60 a year for nothing! Whereas the moneyback account, I was lucky if I got £20 a year.

Or if you use it for no more than five days per month and pay in £1k over the course of the month, as then the £5 Reward balances the overdraft charge - so your net charge is zero.
