Credit balance on card

This seems a bit of a daft situation to be in, but I have an Amazon credit card which now has a large credit balance - like over £1,400. This happened because something I paid for with my Amazon card ages ago ('big purchase, use Amazon card, get points to buy more books with and solve Christmas present buying' sort of reasoning) I ended up being refunded for.
Which is great - £1,400 to play with - but it's a bit of a pain having it stuck as a credit balance in my Amazon account. I could have a lot more uses for this money if it was in my bank account, but when I rang Amazon they said there was no way I could do this. I don't have cc cheques or anything for this cc and they cost money to use anyway - so am I stuck with using my Amazon card for every purchase going until I have finally used up all the £1400, or has anyone got a better suggestion?

Can't you close the account and demand the money back.Barclaycard 3800

If you close the account they will have to transfer the money to another account for you. If you don't need the card anymore, I'd do that.0

What a brilliant idea- I hadn't thought of that at all! Thanks to you and to Broken Hearted as well (who made the same suggestion) - I will do this.
Funnily enough, Amazon didn't suggest this as an option - I wonder why!0 -
when i ended up in credit on one of my cards they sent me a cheques as soon as i asked, no fuss and no messing about, had it within 48 hours too.
and that was only £400, i would kick up a right fuss if they didnt give me back £1400!!0 -
They have no right to keep the money. Tell them you want it credited to your account today or you will close the card and they will have to give it to you anyway. i might mention theft, too. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

I'd send them a letter of demand, and I'd also charge them £35 for the letter, £30 late payment fee, £5 for each day they hold on to the money ('unauthorised overdraft at the bank of BlondeHeadOn') and interest on the account as a whole. Then I'd call them lots and lots and ignore what they say each time.Budget: a mathematical confirmation of your suspicions. A.A. Latimer

I very much like your attitude in this reply.......0 -
I think the person you spoke to didn't know what they were talking about. That money is yours and they must let you have it a.s.a.p.
I have had credit balances on cards in the past and I've never had a problem getting hold of it. The amounts were a lot smaller but it's the same principle. I'd suggest another phonecall and a firm discussion with a manager. This is definitely not on.
Good luck and keep us posted

The Amazon person I spoke to originally suggested that they couldn't send me a cheque because of the possibility of money laundering..... which made me laugh till I choked - because if they looked at the debts in my other ccs they would have to conclude that I was the worst money-launderer ever!!!
(Unless using the cc's money to fund my not-very-well-managed lifestyle counts as money laundering.....mmm, have to think about that one!!)0
