I think there's a bug in FireFox - I have the same problem.

One thing to check - in Prefs, Applications - is the mailto application correctly selected (i.e. pointing to your default email app)?

If you search for "firefox mailto problem" you'll find quite a few suggested solutions, but I haven't tried any of them yet.

You can work around the problem by right-clicking the email link, copying its properties and then pasting that into your email client, but that's a bit of a pain to do...

Never had any mailto problems using 3.0.10 FF here, or on any previous version.

What happens if you click on the abuse triangle?

My thinking too. I'd rather use the cut'n'paste workaround than mess about and risk breaking something else...

For me - nothing. No error message, and nothing in the error console.

I wouldn't worry about breaking something else. See if this here is any help. Mine has always worked on every version of FF, so it's a new one on me.

Thanks - I was more concerned about the OP breaking something than me...

Tried the suggestion in the link, but it makes no difference. I can go to the command line and submit the mailto: string from the "report post" icon to Thunderbird and a new email opens correctly, so it seems to be a problem in FireFox, not T'bird.

It may be related to the fact that I'm using the Swiftfox variant of FF - who knows, but I can live with cut'n'paste for now...
