RE Claiming survey costs after being screwed by Halifax

Can someone please give me some pointers about re-claiming my survey costs from Halifax. My wife and I where dealing with Halifax for our mortguage, we identified a property, put an offer in on a house, we proceeded with the survey as advised. The advisor at the Halifax said we had to open a Halifax current account so that they could pay the money into it, this account also had an overdraft limit that we did not ask for and neither was I told about it, because it opened up a new line of credit for some reason the Halifax changed our mortguage grade and as a result and the additional time wasted the house was sold.

I have now been told that we can not get the money back because the survey has been carried out and I can not begin to say how unfair this is because we are being penalised for their advice and also because they changed their criteria.
I have raised a complaint with the Halifax but if anyone else knows how claim this money back please let me know.

If you had offer on house accepted, mortgage virtually in place, why did vendor accept another offer? Was it a higher offer or cash buyer?
