Civil Service Application

Hi All

OH has recently applied to VOSA (was the dept of transport). Application states they don't inform you if you are unsuccessful and i've been told that the civil service can be very slow in calling you for interviews.

Has anyone else had any experience on how long it took them to hear anything?

Any help appreciated
Zippy

As an ex-civil servant, I can tell you that what they have done is standard policy. Usually the application period last sfor 3-4 weeks, then its another 2-3 weeks fo rthe week long period they intreview for and then its around 3 weeks before they send letters out to tell you if you have the job.

So around, 6 weeks from the application closing date.

One of the problems is, they dont tell you if you have been unsuccessful and it quite often happens that people are put on a list if theres no immediate vacancies, and then only find out they're on the list at a later dtae when they get a letter offering a post, without having had a letter to say they've been out on the list.

It took me about a year from applying to getting an actual job, this was back in 1980 but I'm not sure things have changed that much. Basically I had to take temp jobs or claim benefit in the meantime.

The main applications take around the 6 weeks, its where they put you on a list where the real delay is. When they put you on the list , then you stay there for a year, if there isn't a suitable post wiyjin the year, they remove you from the list, but you could just as easily get offered a job at 11months as 2 month.

Think it all depends on the department. I currently work for Jobcentre Plus, it was quite a long drawn out process, after applying had a letter inviting me to attend some assessment tests about a month ahead. About two weeks after that I got invited to an interview then I didn't hear anything for about a month when I got a phone call offering me the job.

I recently applied for a job with the DVLA, closing date was 17th Feb, they wrote to me by the end of that week inviting me to an interview on 6th March, and rang me this morning to offer me the job :j so they were a lot quicker, a month from closing date to job offer.

Best of luck to him

When I started working for the Civil Service I had to wait about 6 months before I actually got the job, this was in the 80's and I think they had stopped recruiting for awhile so I had to wait, hopefully now they are more quicker.
    Best of luck
