Knitting pattern help

Options
Hello everyone, I hope somebody can help me :o

I've been knitting for about 7 months now and can still only knit square things! I have knitted my fill of scarves, mobile phone pouches and camera cases and would really like to be able to move on to socks and hats. Unfortunately, I cannot work out knitting patterns for the life of me, can anybody help?!

I am very basic - I can knit, purl, make pom poms/tassles and change the colour of wool to make stripes but that's it. How do I turn corners?! How do I crack the code that knitting patterns are written in?!

Any help would be very much appreciated, I would love to be able to join the 'Knit your Square' thread :o Thanks for your time

i would suggest a simple jumper or cardigan its probably much easier than a sock pattern to be honest.

try to get one with hardly any shapings and you can build up from there.

the abbreviations are all mentioned on the pattern usually. but if there is anything you need to know specifically just ask xx

Don`t let the fact that you are not very experienced stop you from joining us on the knit your square thread !!! they are a lovely bunch and always willing to help with any problems. As affordmylife says, you`d probably find a simple jumper easier than socks. There is a `square` jumper pattern available, can`t remember where right now but I`ll see if I can find it for you. Meanwhile, why not hop over and introduce yourself to the rest of the `gang` they`ll make you very welcome.

    Just remembered this one -http://www.caerwentcom.com/oxpat.htm

It`s very easy. i`ll keep looking for the other one tho`

    sali-mali - I decided to answer you on a separate post -
firstly welcome (the others have heard this so many times !!) but I can assure you that I have only been knitting for about 9 months now and joined in here just before xmas (I think) - I went from just knitting squares (garter) to baby buntings, basic blankets, squares, premature baby hats and pull on hats, bootees (although the last item does look like they are made for a very very small pixie) and last but not least a couple of boobs!!!! I still dont think my knitting is great but the ladies here are so very encouraging, helpful and friendly and have some wicked sense of humour (not just regarding knitting) you feel you know them all individually - we all have our ups and downs good days and bad days - we seem to all share a hatred for ironing/housework and an obsession with wool (well I have!) - its addictive and I think if we all lived nearer we would be meeting up although being on here daily feels like you are meeting up. The ladies on here do an enormous amount for charity - I knit only small amounts but it does not matter they are thankful for what ever

I have been known (and still will I am sure) asked what I call "my la la moment" questions but guess what who ever is on will answer

So dont worry its fine come and join us - f1widow xxx

Hi Sali, Just wanted to say basically to Go for it! Pick a simple pattern. Then look online for a key to all the abbreviations which is what I did to help me understand the patterns.

I too have only been knitting about 8/9 months. But I jumped in at the deep end and knitted a cardigan. It needed a lot of time and patience and I reworked it a lot, ripped it back and started again and tore my hair out but I got there.

I have now knitted two cardigans, two tank top style vests, several baby hats and mittens (some of which I sold on ebay), a scarf for my sister trimmed with funky fur, and I have just completed a baby jumper for my nephew expected in August. These were all baby/toddler projects except the scarf.

I have just today started something for myself and am following a vintage 1960/70's pattern!

Just remember that it is trial and error and you will probably make mistakes but don't worry, you can always undo your mistake and take it back or just start over.

Best of luck with it all

Thanks for the advice and welcomes everyone.

My laptop died before I saw anybody's answers, so I started knitting what seems to be a very simple hat pattern (although I've already managed to mess it up, unravel it and start again!)

I'll probably be popping into the Knit a Square thread frequently to ask advice, you'll be sorry you invited me! Next project will be a cardy by the sounds of it!

Thanks again for the help :)

P.S. I've now bookmarked an abbreviations site - makes much more sense now!

    Sali_mali,

Good luck with the knitting, it will get easier...there are patterns to be had which will give you an idea of the skill level required to knit them...go for easy ones at first and then move on...there are knitting tutorials available on various internet sites which will teach you to increase and decrease...once you have mastered these skills there is nothing you can't do.
