Well I wear my eyeliner very thickly anyway - but because of my style I can get away with it.

I work as a make-up artist at the moment and I can recommend Revlon colour stay products. Their eyeliners (both liquid and pencil) are my favourites to work with except really expensive theater make up which glides on like a dream.

The only wisdom I can provide for you is that you can get away with black, but your best friend is probably brown (you never mentioned your eye colour). I wouldn't go for grey at all unless you have very blue eyes.

To help put your eyeliner on your top lid, draw a dot in the middle of your lash line close to how thick you want the line to be and draw from the dot to your outer eye, then from the dot to your inner eye.

As people have also said there are many helpful tutorials on YouTube so you should definitely check them out if you have time!

could someone give me some advice on how best to apply eye liner and which are the best brand? i only started wearing make up when i was in my early twenties, had no female relatives who wore make up so had no one to ask about or to dip in make up bags when younger to experiment. i seemed to get the hang of it for a while or so i thought. but i still found my eyes looked like little piggie ones so thought maybe upper lids to would help but didnt really get to master that. stopped wearing it then for last 5 years and only now have decided to start wearing it again now, think i need all the help i can now 45!! have bought both cheap and expensive ones and dont see much difference. obviously now will need to throw away most of what i have now anyway as i remember reading somewhere it has limited shelf life. also not sure on colours i have brown hair with with highlights of very light brown with quite a sallow complexion. never look really white am lucky that tan lasts all year around. also am considering the permanent eye liner but not sure how i go about finding the best one. after all it is a tattoo at the end of the day and quite an expensive one at that so want to go to the right one. sorry if i have rambled have bad habit of writing as i speak. note to self to work on that lol

Have a look at this youtube users videos, she has dozens of step-by-step make up tutorials and if you message her and ask nicely I'm sure she'd give some advice. I've been watching these for about 2 months and it really is useful.
