Has anyone else here found their local supermarkets are actually discontinuing or making the decision to no longer stock some value or basics brand items?
My local Mr T has not had any value stock cubes of any kind since January so I decided to ask them about this.It was decided by our manager that they would no longer stock these items (I also notice they are absent from the online stores - not that I have ever used those). The only choice now being to use dearer ones at approx £1 each instead of 8-10p.
As I make a lot of soups and need to restock I tried today our Mr S.I don't like the Mr S value stock cubes as a rule as they are of the soft kind like Knorr and I do not find that they melt as well and you end up with glooby lumps in your stock or at the bottom of the Pyrex jug you made it in. However even though these were at 29p twice the price of Mr t I still thought they would be a cheaper and better bet than forking over £1 or more.
It seems now that our Mr S no longer stocks value stock cubes of any kind either.Leaving me no option as to either stop making soups altogether or pay some astronomical amount for my stock.
I do not see where it makes sense for supermarkets to stop stocking these items and making the less well off members of society (which is increasing by the day at the moment) pay so much more for their goods. I find it especially galling that they blame a lack of shelf space and yet sell things that can either be found elsewhere(our Mr T stocks a lot of kiddies clothes but has little room for foods and is always discontinuing them due to lack of space) or are minority products which take up a lot more shelf room than they must sell ( we have a large ethnic food section in our Mr T which is odd as we already have a dwindling Polish community which has it's own lower priced store in the area and no discernible ( I have lived here 10 years plus so I have a good local knowledge and what you see out and about) afro caribbean community tho Mr T stocks those items. Also a large section of our Mr S is now given over to Jewish and kosher products which again is not in abundance in this area.
We do not own a car nor do we drive so have no choice but to frequent Messrs T and S for our groceries/household shopping. All the profit they make when they are clearly not serving their customers strokes me as rather obscene.

Hi Reverbe,
We now have a board specifically for discussing groceries and food shopping so I've moved your thread over there.
Pink
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.0 -
Now I can't find my post... cheers. What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0

Yes, I've been getting more & more annoyed with Tescos no longer stocking many of their value items. I now feel 'forced' to pay for the more expensive versions. I've always been a fan of Tesco - no longer.

I nearly blew my stack when they stopped doing the value low fat (healthy!!) marge - but Asda does one so just get it from there now. Not as nice but better than paying 98p for the next one up in Tesco's!.
Also rather annoyed when they stopped doing the goldenfields cooking oil - they just do an organic rapeseed oil now, so a friend gets me the goldenfields from Morrisons now.
I have decided not to be led like a sheep - if they stop doing something I just find the equivalent elsewhere. I still get a lot of stuff there - but it is down to about 2/3 of what I used to get! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
There is no margin in selling 'value 'packs so once you are enticed in with little treats they are dropped in the hope you don't move on as one product dropped out of maybe 10 you really like hopefully mean you will stay loyal. The margin on value pack Produce is 24% where as the margin on class 1 conventional is as high as 42%. All about space filling on the shelves and why stock a 4p per pack profit when you can stock a 12p per pack profit item.
Vote with your CASH !
Always fill in the suggestion book ( all supermarkets have them even if not on public show ) and ask the question why !

I hate the way supermarkets are doing that! Our local Tesco has a whole 2 rows of own brand stuff but it's all expensive stuff like hoovers and alcohol. I dont see why they cant just sell cheaper things, to be honest..Sometimes.I.Wonder.Why.I'm.Still.Here..Sometimes.I.Think.I'm.Going.Crazy.0

Aldi stock cubes are some of the best I've ever used and are usually 69p a pack.0
