Shortening a dress with a fancy lace bottom- is it possible?

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read this!

I have fallen head over heels in love with this maggie sottero dress:

http://www.maggiesottero.com/dress.aspx?keywordText=grace&keywordType=any&page=0&pageSize=12&style=J857

I am 5 foot 2" and the standard length for this is 57" so about 5" to long :( I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be possible to have it shortened due to the decorative edge along the bottom? I cant really afford to buy it new, there are a few 'normal' length ones around but finding one in a shorter length is proving difficult!

Any advice would be appreciated- thank you!

Normally, dresses with a fancy hemline can be shortened at the waist, however, there is no seam line at the waist. So, the scallop edge of the lace can be cut (only between point a and b where you will need it shortening for walking purposes) and then re-stitched. What I mean is, the hemline will not be shortened all of the way around. Only at the immediate front to enable you to walk. If this makes any sense to you at all!

Thank you! I think I understand- the train would be left the original length, the scallop edge cut and the length changed (I presume along a sort of gentle curve so it blends in with the unchanged back length) and then the edge sewn back on- very carefully of course! That has given me a lot of peace of mind, thanks again :)

Yes. The lace will be cut along its "lace edge" or scallop edge. It's normally like embroidered tulle so they will cut along the edge.
Take a look at this http://www.harrington-nlt.co.uk/pages/3860(I).html the lace edge will be cut away from the tulle then re stitched. It is literally about 20" wide at the front it will need to be shortened.

My maggie sottero dress came in a petite size... can you get this one in petite? having said that, i am 5'4" and wearing about 1.5in heels and it fits perfectly, so maybe petite is still too grande for you!
