Boots Old Charge?

Have any of you ever seen anything like this before!!!?? It's a first for me.

Received this email at about 11am this morning.

Dear customer,

I am contacting you regarding an order you placed with us in November.

We haven't yet processed the charge for this order but wish to tell you this will happen very soon.

You will see this charge on your next statement.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

Kind regards,

Emma Williams

Now I did purchase some digital cameras from Boots around this time and I'm almost certain that the money came out of the bank, although I will need to double check this.

If this is genuine are Boots allowed to decide 4 months later that they have forgot to take some money off me!!??

Any comments on the whole thing are greatly appreciated.

  • I had this once when I bought some train tickets at the train station, I never thought anymore about it til 4/5 months after the money came out of my account so I went to the bank & they said if you give your card details to pay for anything they don't have to take the money straight away but anytime upto TWO years afterwards!

I just find it shocking that they can do this. Although I understand that they are entitled to the money as I purchased the goods.

On the whole though it's hard for me as a student to now find the money at this time of year, due to the timing of student loan payments etc.

    Anyhows........

but, you agreed to the charge, you must have known that it would come out of your account at some point.

It's bad accounting on your part, imo

Not going to argue that I should have checked that the money came out of the account. I think it's probably because I used my secondary student account rather than my main current account. Just haven't ever come across a company such as Boots failing to take money for a transaction until such a late time.
  • alan, boots are renound for taking money much later than you presume, this happend to me a while ago they took so long to take the money that in the end the debit card had expired!!!!!
I must admit bad accounting or not i totaly forgot about the fact they did not take the money imediatly and it was a bit of a shock to recieve an email 5 months later demanding money !!!! :D
  • T's & C's may state that a retailer can debit the money up to 2 years after the original purchase but it doesn't seem fair really does it? It makes it difficult for someone who is budgeting. Personally I don't really take notice of what my bank balance is as I use an excel program to know exactly what I've got left to spend, but it would be annoying if retailers made a habit of not taking monies months after as I cross everything off when it does go through my bank account. I would keep on having to check all the time. Seems a bit lame on the retailers behalf, it's like boots have done a sweep on their system to mop up all the bodge ups like not taking monies when they should have!

There are rules which concern the delay between a payment being made and the money being debited from the account. Beyond a certain threshold the customer is entlted to dispute the transaction esulting in a refund which goes back to the retailer as a chargeback. Naturally they can then pursue you perfectly legitimately for the payment but it may give you time to make arrangements if your 'bad accounting' (money savers are harsh aren't they?) leaves you in trouble.

The rules will vary depending on your card issuer but I'm fairly certain 3 months is beyond most limits. If you feel you'd like to try this route you should talk to your bank in the first instance.
