GE Money/Burtons Default Notice

Hi all not sure if anyone knows of anything like this.Basically back in 2006 i missed 1 month of minimum payment to Burtons and recieved a later stating you have been served a default notice, fairly sure it wasn't a default sums notice or a chase up.I, about to move out and thinking of the 6 years it would be on there phoned them and stated it was 1 day late due to work commitments and not getting to the bank.If it was 3 months fine but not for 1 month. My mother has Royal Sun Alliance car insurance and they tried to take the DD 3 times in 2 days and defaulted her for missing 1 month techinically even though all 3 attempts came in 2 days and my mum had no idea of it.Can kind of see how that could happen they tried 3 times so default but mine was 1 missed when i payed regularly by bank slip only for 2 years.I've never had the courage since to check my credit history but now i'm older i know i must be brave .Well after phoning Burtons i was told that 'Don't worry sir its not what you think it is ' , i said so it won't go on my credit record as a default then? and he said ' no its only an internal default within GE Capital bank (now GE Money i think) just affects dealings with us but is not a general default notice so my advice is to ignore it actually '.Sure it said served by 1974 credit act with Red writing , would a full default clearly show up on my credit file or could it be any other kind of default? been paying it regularly for another 3 years now , and could i get it removed if it was only for 1 month or that i was told it wasn't a default?? not sure if there are rules on when they get served or if i saw someone else asking for the default to be sent like a data request , GE Money now handed burtons to banco santander so bet they don't have a copy of it on file same as recently took off protection insurance i was never told about just a nightmare really and its my only real blot on my credit in 8 years of it.Is it worthwhile getting it removed and how would i go about it? would it be done as a goodwill gesture or just very over optimistic?.Really appreciate anyones help as its been nagging me for 3 years and before coming on here i just accepted it.Thanks in advance
