I keep a packet of frozen peas in the freezer, and everything else I get from Stony Stratford market on a Saturday, depending on what they've got that I think is reasonably priced.
    .

we have the same fruit and veg stall at our local market on a wednesday, he is really reasonable and the produce is usually really good quality

For fresh, look in the bargain bin for something you can cook on that day or the next. A lot of things are cheaper frozen or tinned, especially peas and tinned chopped tomatoes (which are, of course also a lot quicker if you're using them for a sauce as they're chopped!). IMHO green leafy stuff tastes waaaay better fresh than frozen though.

I don't know if this is a local thing, but I tend to go to Asda every Wednesday at about 2pm and they have usually just reduced the veg. This week I got a big pack of prepared butternut squash and sweet potato for 40p, chopped carrot and swede 20p, fresh chives 10p, 750g bag of satsumas 45p and quite a few other bargains.

I also got fresh ready rolled puff pastry for 65p so I made some pasties filled with butternut squash/sweet potato/chives/cheese. Served with 50p pre prepared sprouts (don't eat meat) ... absolutely delicious!!

I find I can often buy veg that would normally be too expensive this way. For instance, hasselback potatoes that would be out of my reach.

    mmmm that sounds amazing!

I find alot of reduced veg in morrisons...not necessarily on its use by date, just not as "pretty" or well sized as the other stuff. usually only early in the day though.

  • I tend to buy veg at Aldi. They have 6 different fruit/veg for 49p currently butternut squash, lemons & limes (mixed bag), cherry tomatoes, satsumas, courgettes and mangoes.
I am also trying to grow some things in pot this year - lettuce seems to be easy to grow. Also going to grow runner beans, easy to grow and lots cheaper.
