It's all Thatchers fault.

I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

of course it's thatcher's fault. it couldn't possibly be the fault of the general public for borrowing loads more than they could afford to pay back out of greed, after all.

Good article. I wish I'd written it but I would have mentioned the buying of votes through right to buy and the destruction of the council housing market.

    Key points for me are:

    1. The destruction of real work (Engineering) and the move to poncy non-jobs (Finance). Deregulation of the financial markets to ensure those in poncy non-jobs could flourish (by the cheap credit bubble).

    2. Income tax fell, especially for the rich. Indirect taxes rose, especially for the poor. The rise in indirect taxes outweigh the reductions in income tax for the poor while the rich are laughing all the way to the bank..

My vote would also go to Attlee. He was constructive whereas Thatcher was essentially divisive and destructive. I agree that union power had to be curbed, but it's a shame Wilson and Castle were not able to do this and spare us the excesses of the Iron Lady. Contempt for education and culture was another demerit of Thatcherism.
