I think when comparing Richmond and Kingston you have to remember that Kingston has superb schools - some of the best in the country - that matter a lot to potential buyers.

It does indeed, but some of the very best ones (Tiffin etc) are very hard to get into if you actually live in the borough, because entrance is governed by exam rather than distance from the school. I think more than 50% of the pupils at Tiffin Girls are from outside of the borough of Kingston.

Primary schools are also a massive problem here. They are planning to convert the old Surbiton Hospital into a new school to deal with the overflow from the others. I guess this is partially due to a few less parents being able to afford private schooling at the moment.

There is actually a reported shortage of secondary school places in Kingston and there has been for a while even before the recession.

Lots of secondary age children have to go to school out of the borough in neighbouring boroughs such as Hounslow, Richmond Upon Thames and Merton.

A factor in both cases is the council, like a few other councils, did not factor in the number of families with school age children moving out of inner London.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
