Pre packaged v loose fruit and veg

I was in sainsburys yesterday to pick up a few chillis. I saw the pre packaged chillis had 50% extra free and was about to throw them in my basket when the price per Kilo at the bottom of the price label made me stop. They worked out at £10/kilo! The loose ones were £4-39/kilo!
I can't believe the difference. Any other massive differences in price that you guys have noticed?

These nothing that springs to mind, but I have read on here before, where you still have to compare the apparent offers to the goods not on offer0

We always buy chillis loose, as we don't tend to use loads of them. Usually pay less than 10p for one chilli, so I hate it when you can only get the packaged ones.
I think most (all?) veg is cheaper loose than packaged unless there is a really good offer on.0 -
As said, think most stuff is cheaper loose than pre packed - you gotta pay for the packaging and having it prepacked for you.
But I was put off buying lose stuff after seeing on a few occasions people coughing and spluttering all over it, yuk - no thanks - not even if you wash it anyway - always buy prepacked.0 -

I always avoid pre-packed, because I can't justify the excessive use of plastic just to bring me a few vegetables. I used to always buy the Tesco Value mushrooms, because I use so many, but that would be at least 52 of those blue plastic trays a year!!!! I used lots in the garden for young plants and slug barriers, but I reached saturation point with them, and this year have changed to loose mushrooms into paper bags (which I recycle).
I find the environmental cost of packaging too high - it won't break down once we throw it away. I know moneysaving is the ethic here, but also the old-style ethic, and goods didn't used to come pre-packed like that. I get my organic veg box, which of course cuts down on a lot of that.
I take the point about people spreading bugs, but I don't get colds, haven't had a sick day in about five years, and have only had food poisoning once in my life (from a pre-packed salsa), so I don't think loose produce is harming me! Plus, just because it's pre-packed, doesn't mean it's untouched by (bug-ridden?) human hands!! Euurghh!!0 -
I noticed that Tesco value red onions in a packet worked out more expensive than the loose standard ones.I buy from a farmshop mostly so that is nearly all loose, although they sell their apples in 4 lb bags. But at least they tell you the price per lb so you can compare the different varieties.Supermarket pre-packed bags of apples(Tesco in this case) are priced per apple so you can't compare the price with loose ones which are priced by weight. The only way to do it is to weigh the bag.0

Vegetables are grown in the ground, what's to say some animal hasnt coughed all over it? Or even a bird with avian flu or something? Better not eat any vegetables now had we?! :eek:0 -

What a cunning use for packaging! I'll not be buying seed trays this year!My Doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die." The other two apparently became immortal.

This isn't quite the same thing, but I was in Tesco's the other day buying carrots. How on earth can they justify 51p a kilo for loose OR prepacked carrots, when a bag of prepacked Value carrots (bearing in mind these look identical to the non-Value carrots) are sold at 17p a kilo?
