flatmates debt, will it affect me

Hi.
Just looking for a little advice really.

My flatmate is hopeless with his personal finance, all rent and household bills are usually paid with a little nagging but otherwise it's a big mess.

He has debt collector letters and such turning up every few months.

My question is, could this affect me or my credit rating in any way, we have no joint bank accounts but rent, Ctax and gas and electric are in our joint names.

thanks

It won't directly affect your credit rating as you don't have joint financial products. However this is very unsatisfactory - you don't want to find that bailiffs have been and done a walking possession on your belongings. I think I'd sit down and point him to this website! If he defaults on your rent, council tax or utility bills you would be liable for the entire debt - can you afford that?

    Thanks for that fire fox.

I didn't think that it would affect me but just wanted to hear someone else say it. I am planning on moving out sometime in the next few months as I don't get on with the bloke (head in the sand kind of guy). Luckily our home comes with locks on the bedroom doors so if bailiffs did come round they hopefully wouldn't get into my room.

    Too stressful living here.
