Have just booked flydrive for next Easter :j , will be finishing with approx 4 days to drive south from Monterey, flying home from LAX.

Not interested in LA other than to fly home from, but looking to spend a few nights a various places on that coastline - obviously I'll be doing research via guidebooks/other websites etc, but wondered if anyone had any personal recommendations for accomodation along this stretch of coast - will be 3 of us, self, DH and DD who will be 14.

Thanks!

  • My Dh and I did Route 1 in 2007, and boy, did we have a wonderful holiday.
We stayed at a wonderful little place called San Louis Obispo, which has been voted nicest small town in the USA.

We stayed at a hotel called The Apple Farm, On Monteray Street.
You have to see it to belive it, but I promise you, your stay will be relaxed, and happy.

We stayed in a motel style room, with a 4 poster bed, fire, and a private terrace with our own hot tub.

Hot cider and cookies were served at 7pm, and you could sit outside on a rocker, or have a dip in the pool.

Please check it out - we will be there in August, and can't wait!

I have heard a lot about The apple farm.... It is supposed to be a very nice place to stay

However, We are driving from SF to LA in June and we didn't want to spend that much money on a hotel, so we decided to stay in San Simeon.. It's very close to hearst castle and the hotels are pretty cheap around there

I will let you know how it was :)

Just south of SLO is Pismo Beach and the Kon Tiki Inn. It doesn't look like much from the street - just a regular motel with prices to match. But then you get into your room and through on to your balcony (all the rooms have a see view and either a terrace or a balcony) and look over the Pacific and it is a bit special. If your feeling energetic it has its own staircase down the cliff to the beach.

We were there last month and spent two nights in Cambria which is half way between LA and San Francisco. It was a really lovely place, a small town with a nice community feel. Fantastic restaurants and great shoping, more boutique types and small, friendly curio shops. We stayed at this place

it's not high end but cosy and very welcoming. Great swimming pool and spa which is open till 10.00 pm. We were the only ones using it when we were there.

There was four of us, DH, DS (13) and DD (10). We spent this Easter over there and we were lucky enough to see the Sea Lions that only come ashore for about 5/6 weeks a year.

Carmel is really lovely, the town Clint Eastwood was mayor of. Going back a few years now, but it had a lot of charm.

Re Los Angeles, the only part I would stay in is Santa Monica that's quite nice. Hollywood's a dive

Thanks for replying Sally, Apple Farm looks beautiful (a little pricey, though maybe if we get some cheap nights somewhere else there'll be enough left in the budget! :D), and I've heard San Luis Obispo is meant to be nice.

Thanks, Pismo Beach is on our list of 'possible' places to stay (mind you it's a long list, everywhere on this coast is a 'possible'!) I'll check it out - I like the sound of 'prices to match'!.
