i thought ALL children were entitled to a free nursery place?

Yeah.. being entitled to it and getting it are two completely different things! We're in Craigavon area and we couldn't even get a Pay Place (sent us out a list too and NO Place available anywhere in the local area and they even included Dungannon... yeah because that is local!!)

Are you saying that the middle & upper classes can't underachieve???
That's slanderous..I think they can underachieve and make complete balls ups just as well as the rest of society.... Look at the current situation our banks are in... talk about a bunch of criminals, underachievers and blatent idiots :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I didn't say that middle class people can't underachieve. It's not about individual cases it's about demographic groups. As a group children of middle class parents don't underachieve.
Unless the government is to assess the individual needs of every child, which I think we'd all object to for many reasons, then they have to apply rules that mean they catch most of those who tend to underachieve.

I was not able to get a place for my 4 year old. There was long waiting lists at all the nursery's around us (the shortest had 20 ahead of him) so he missed out on it. I paid for him to go to the daycare centre at Magee uni 2 days a week where I study. I got a grant to pay 80% of the cost thankfully as it was really very expensive (£48+ for 3 sessions), not sure if that is a common price but I was shocked.

Dont understand why if the parent work they couldnt take up a P/T place. Someone must be looking after the child while they are at work anyway so could they not do the collection? Private nurserys etc all do collections from schools.

other children may be a problem i was lucky to get ds 1st choice in nursery unit of my daughters school in the morning session. if he had been given afternoon session i couldnt have took it. as my dad looks after them 2 days a week when im at work. he would have had to drop ds off at 12:30 pick dd up at 2pm then ds at 3pm he couldnt have done it as in dundonald and we r in Ards.
i was so worried we would not get morning as again people on benefits get first even with daughter at the school we were still away down the selection list but thankfully he got the 1 st choice.
anyone does have a right to appeal it should explain that in the letter. i had a friend had to do this last year and she won and got the place she had picked for first choice

If you can't get any satisfaction with you Education and Library Board try sending an email to your local political representative using this website.

    http://www.theyworkforyou.com/

I sent one a while back when an number of cars were vandalised in our street. Both the Alliance and DUP representatives were in contact within a couple of days. We now have neighbourhood watch as a direct result.
(I'm located in the south east belfast/castlereagh).

If they don't know it is a problem how can they fix it?

    Good luck

You're not the only one, I've heard of quite a few not getting a place this year.
A few things...some of the nurseries had to have acceptance letters back by the 8th ot place was offered to someone else, others the date is 13/14th so there is still a chance if you ring round and push.
Also one of the nurseries in our area has started doing an afternoon session now as demand was so high.

My friend was in your position last year and got in touch with her MLA who then got onto it and the nursery 'found' another 15 places!

Another person I have heard of managed to find out that some nurseries don't even look at your preference form!
Her 1st choice doesn't acknowledge it but looks instead at other criteria.....benefits being number one and locality number 2, since it is in a very built up area and it is small nobody outside of the neighbouring streets would get in.
Her 2nd choice nursery is so popular it only takes people who have it as their 1st choice so that ruled her out for that one! (you with me so far;))
Her 3rd choice is also popular so looks at people with family already in the school, then 1st choice, then benefits and now has added incentive to take younger children who will get 2yrs there.

Basically it meant her whole form was useless because her first choice doesn't acknowledge preference as selection criteria.

One last thing is that my DD is getting 2yrs (this will be her second) but her little friend was supposed to start with her last year (also to get 2yrs) but because when it came to August/Sept time her was still in nappies, he couldn't go....there was more than one in this situation so places became available very late on.
