Tax allowances on 2 jobs

Hi all,

Being a bank holiday means I have spent a little time filing payslips etc. I have some questions that hopefully someone might be able to answer for me.

I am a teacher, and having read around the forums and HMRC website I believe I am entitled to reclaim tax allowances on both my General Teaching Council and National Union of Teachers subscriptions. These are both listed as authorised on the HMRC website, and I understand I can claim for the previous 6 years (although in reality this will only be 4, as i'm in my 4th year of teaching.)

However, I also have a casual job, mainly during school holidays, where I drive coaches for a local company. This is PAYE and I pay tax at BR on this income, which I understand to be correct. However, I am provided with a uniform for this job, which I am required to wash/ iron at home. It meets the requirements because it has a company logo on it.
Will HMRC grant me the tax allowance for this, which I understand to be £60.

Thanks for any advice people may be able to offer!

you are correct your second job should be taxed basic rate
i have heard of magazine subs being tax-deductible so I believe you are right there
Not sure about washing clothes at home - but this sounds possible! If it's on the hmrc website, then it must be true!

I'm not sure how you go about claiming your magazine subs and your washing allowance though - have you found that out yet?
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

The OP's 'subscription' is for Union dues....(National Union for Teachers) and General Teaching Council is the authority which they pay a 'fee' to each year, and have to be a member in good standing in order to teach in England.

Does your school not reimburse you for the GTC payments? Ours get taken out of one pay cheque and refunded by the school on the next.

My school does not reimburse GTC fees. Would be nice if they did.

Yes they do, well, the LEA does, but not fully.

Assuming your system works the same as ours, you pay a subscription fee of £33, and then get an allowance of £33 in your next salary payment, BUT the £33 allowance is Gross, and obviously after Tax and NI you actually recieve less so don't get full reimbursement. The tax reclaim makes up the difference.

Jem16, if you work in a state school you should get GTC fees reimbursed- if not, ask why.

    Annie,

Please take this in the spirit that my comment is intended, but I do not fully understand why you made this post. You don't seem to fully understand what I am asking, (where do magazine subs come in to my question!) and haven't really sought to answer my query. Whilst I appreciate the time you have taken in reading my post and writing a reply, if every member replied to every post saying they weren't sure of the answers we would have a very long and hard to search forum!

Just to reiterate what I was originally asking, I was looking to find out whether two "allowances" for different jobs can be claimed.

To clarify perhaps I could use an example. I work with another part time driver on occasion who also works as a self employed carpenter. I know there is a uniform allowance which he could claim for work on the coaches, I know there is a tool allowance he could claim for his carpentry work, but can he claim both as he does both jobs?

Perhaps the difference is that I'm in a state school in Scotland. We pay £40 and it has never been reimbursed in all the 32 years I have been teaching.

According to this http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/g.htm#1 (about 1/4 way down the page) you can reclaim tax on subscriptions to the General Teaching Council for Scotland. This might be helpful in some way Jem?

Thanks. I have been reclaiming tax on both my union and GTC fees for quite a number of years now. At least it's something.

To answer your question about washing your uniform, yes you can claim this allowance to be included in your code number for the coach driving job. A simple letter to your main tax office setting out these claims is enough, but make sure you ask for a refund for the relief on your subs for past years, rather than a code adjustment.
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths
