There are a lot of London areas like that. The variety comes from the wide range of ethnic backgrounds and income brackets within quite small areas, something you wouldn't usually find outside of a big city. There are lots more than I can personally recommend - south, south-east and central areas are my "patch".
Greenwich is really good - a big market (antiques, arts & crafts), loads of little tiny shops, second-hand bookshops etc. Also a lot of interesting historical places to visit, a small theatre, an art-house cinema and a plentiful supply of free classical concerts due to Trinity College of Music being based there. It's extremely touristy and quite an expensive place to live but it's still south-east London, and accordingly there are shops and attractions to suit all budgets and tastes. Zone 2 on the DLR or overground.
Marylebone and Richmond are great places to bum around interesting little shops (Richmond is particularly good for charity shops) but they are upmarket and expensive; Lewisham, Peckham and Brixton are excellent for the huge variety of food and other things available at their street markets and big ethnic supermarkets.
I like to walk around Central London when I need to get from A to B, and after 10 years in London I still often surprise myself on my travels by finding interesting little shopping streets I never knew existed.Operation Get in Shape
