Anywhere that uses a piercing gun should be avoided. That's places like Claire's, hairdressers, chemists, Debenhams, Selfridges or any other shops. Piercing guns are not sterile, and were originally designed for branding cattle.

You should go to a piercing studio and have a needle piercing. It's actually quicker and easier and hurts less, whatever Studex would like you to believe. You'll also get good quality jewellery, and not crappy gold plated stuff that's full of nickel. And it will probably be cheaper - mine were £14 and came with titanium studs!

For aftercare, you just need to use a simple salt solution. You don't need to buy any expensive chemicals.

Although Swattie has given a positive report about ear-piercing at Claire's, here's a thread that you might be interested in:

Although my ears have been pierced so long (35 years) that I can't remember where I had it done, I'd be inclined to go to a proper piercing/tattoo studio.
Do you think pierced ears is on the way out as seems much less popular these days?
Do you really think it's less popular these days?

Don't go anywhere that uses a piercing gun. This will include clares, salons and such.

To be honest I'm shocked anyone would even consider getting pierced with something that can't and hasn't been sterilized, by someone who's had a half day course in how to use a piercing gun. Seriously, that's just madness. Especially since you'll be the first to complain if/when it gets infected.

    Find a professional piercer.

I have my ears pierced 3 times each, all with a gun, no problems, but I had the top of my left ear done with a gun years ago, it never healed up, so a few years later I got it done again with a gun, same thing.... left it a lot of years then went to a piercer and had it done with a needle, I very nearly fainted it was so bad, the piercer was very worried! I think it must have been because of the scar tissue built up because of the gun piercings in the same place... anyway... it STILL didn't heal up after being done with a needle, so I gave up, booo!
  • my daughter had her ears done twice at Claires, first time 10 years ago and second time 6 months ago, both times absolutely no problems.
