birthday sponge cake for 30 people??

I just know one of you lovely ladies (or gents!) will know the answer to this...
I enjoy baking and am not bad and as i now have a little boy i have started making novelty cakes.. its fun. A friend has asked me to make a cake for her grandsons 1st birthday, football themed (not a problem, i have a great idea) but i am not sure how big i need it to be.. she said she wants 30 slices they suggested 14" square but this seems quite big and i would have to buy a tin especially and they are VERY pricey .. would i be able to get away with a 2 layer 10" cake (so would make a nice high slice approx 3in x1in) as this would be a more practical size for me to be able to use the tin again?

also if this will do size wise what proportion of ingredients would i need for each layer (i'd only get 1 tin so would make the 2 halves seperatley). i normally use large eggs and do equal to weight of eggs for other ingredients (so 4 eggs for a typical victoria sandwich) and how long would i need to cook it as it is bigger than my normal one and need to make sure it cooks through...

last question, how long do they keep for uncut as i dont want to leave it till the last minute, will it keep for a few days once iced?

im excited about doing it, but a bit nervous as doing one for myself is one thing, but someone else is quite another!!

thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you have!!

I would confirm that it is possible to hire tins - we have a card and cake shop which hires them out....

If you are going to completely ice (or cover) a cake you can join them side-by-side with buttercream...
