Eating porridge oats raw

Does anyone know they health benefits of this?

I'm not really a fan of actual cooked porridge, but I can't help snacking on a bowl of raw oats each day.

Someone said to me this might be bad for you, is this true?

can not see that it is as you have them raw in musli
  • Sounds healthy to me (although I prefer them cooked, I have a friend who eats them raw all the time and has come to no harm..) - perhaps go for organic oats if you are worried about pesticide residues etc?

Muesli is made with "raw" oats ;)

Have you tried soaking them in cold milk or apple juice if you want a "wet" consistency without actually cooking it?

I have eaten them 'raw' for years. Maybe I was too lazy to make porridge (pre microwave). Love them either way.

Yes, I like them raw, with cold milk. Must say I like the sound of the added ginger - must give that a go.

I'm no expert, but I believe that oats are full of soluble fibre, and generally very good for you.

I don't know the actual health benefits, other than if you're buying the whole rolled oats rather than the quick cook ones you'll be getting lots of roughage. It's v.good for you, and is supposed to help you feel full for longer (can't say as I've noticed though). The quick cook ones have been through a bit more processing to make them softer, and consquently aren't "whole".

As other posters have indicated I too eat raw oats/porridge - I cobble together my own muesli with dried or fresh fruit and nuts. It's lovely! I got the idea from Carol Voderman's book (ok you may not be a fan...) and there was something similar in one of Jamie Oliver's books. It's definitely not bad for you.
  • I love raw oats and make my own muesli with them - I use oats, sultanas, grated apple, honey and natural yoghurt and its lovely!!

my 3 yo loves eating raw oats - he'll often take a bowlful into the living room and munch on them. They've never made him ill)

(They also make lovely patterns on the carpet - finger art without the paint, but are much easier to hoover up than cooked ones - believe me :D)

I'm a nutritionist - nothing at all wrong with raw oats - I eat them regularly.
