do you think it is possible?

for a single person to live on a food budget of £10 per week if they were able to make everything from scratch?

with setting up in a new place, the £10 from the beginning would have to take into account all food and accessories needed, eg oil, salt, etc.

Yes, I think so, with careful meal planning and bulk cooking for the freezer. I'm single and am aiming to spend £50 this month, making everything from scratch, but that £50 includes toiletries and cleaning products, so £10 per week for food should be doable. However, I don't think it's doable if you have to use part of the money to get you going, for buying oil, salt etc - think you may need a small fund to buy the basics and get going, and from then on £10 should be achievable for food.

It helps if you always think how you can stretch food to the max - for example, I used to use a packet of tofu for 2 breakfasts as scrambled tofu. Now I use the same packet, make a savoury loaf, and end up with 6 main courses from it - so it stretches much further. It may take time for you to get into the swing of it and find how it will work for you.

I'd also add that eating as heathily as possible is vital for me and there's no sacrifice of nutrients or quality here - as I think Weezl demonstrated as well on her thread. I eat really well on a small food budget. As my signature will testify!

wish i could find fine cheaper (bulk buy?) tinned tomatoes, so i can make my fave dish at moment- sausage (from frozen, supermarket cheapo brand), onion, pepper and pasta bake!

for a change, i sometimes bake saus separately with a potato, or do a salad / rice..

  • I don't think it is possible unless you have a good basic stock of staple ingredients like salt, herbs, tinned and packet basic stuff (flour, tomatoes etc). I always find threads like these fascinating but I know that I can't achieve anything like that kind of economy, no matter how hard I try.

the price of tinned tomatoes seems to have risen very sharply i know that a year or maybe 18 months ago i was buying them for 9p a tin then when they increased to 16p a tin i thought that was a steep increase, and now they are about 33-45p

Sorry sweetheart, you can't mention something that sounds as tasty as that without giving the recipe out
