JSA ending? Can't live off 1 salary!

Hello

I've been lurking here for a while, but just got some news today and I need some advice, please?!

My hubby was made redundant in October '08, and has been claiming jobseekers allowance since then. He has applied for work and is actively seeking employment, but has not found a job yet.

He got a letter today saying that his entitlement to JSA would be ending as he has been claiming JSA for 6 months.

At the moment we have a loan that is covered by PPI (luckily I guess!) which we will have to pay if his JSA ends.

I have a question - I earn about £18000 a year (before deductions) - will he still be able to get JSA? How much will it be?

I'm really sorry to bother everyone here. I'm really worried and I can't seem to make him understand that we are barely keeping our heads above water as it is, if they stop the JSA and we need to pay the loan, mortgage, bills etc, well, we won't be able to. My salary just isn't enough!!

We've just had a big fight and I don't know what to do! Please help!!

Thank you in advance!

but if his entitlement to jsa ends he wont be able to get jsa
he could apply for income based but i think you earn too much
the government suggests you can live of £94 a week so any money you earn under that they may pay but they are very cagey about amounts untill they decided

is there not any way he could make money . do you have things you can sell , etc

No he will not be entitled to IBJSA as your earnings are too high. Do you have children?

If you are struggling with debt you should seek debt advice from the CAB.
  • I'm already selling things on ebay, doing onepoll.com, things like that, but It's pennies really in the big scheme of things.

No, we don't have any kids.

When he was getting JSA, and the loan was covered, it was just enough money to live on.

I tried to explain that now we will have to pay the loan, and if we don't have any money coming in except my salary, that we WILL NOT be able to afford everything, and he said that we wouldn't be worse off?!?! I don't know what he's going on about, if you get less money in, and you have to pay more out, you're worse off, yes?!

Sorry, I'm just really stressed and not sure how we can cope.

I said that he would need to get a job, any job, even if he hated it, but then he said I was nagging, so we had a massive fight and now I'm upstairs and crying and I don't know what to do!

I'm so sorry for being a soft !!!!, I just don't know what to do :(

He can still sign on to get his NI stamp paid but he will not receive any money. If he keeps signing on the PPI will still pay his credit commitments.
  • thank you cifpower, that was one of the things that I was really really worried about.

    *feels slightly better*

    Hi

Thanks for posting this and I hope you get sorted, we are in a similar situation. I earnt a very good part time wage and my husband earns just over £16k.
We have a large mortgage and we have PPI on the mortgage which will pay 50% of it for up to 12 months as long as I am still signing on, trouble is there is a distinct lack of jobs, my JSA will end beginning of October, I dont think I will get any help after that - is this correct?

We have two kids. Do they look at how much your mortgage is etc when they decide whether to pay you IB JSA or not ? As we will really struggle if I dont find anything by October.
Will I still have to sign on every 2 weeks for my NI contribution even though they wont pay me anything ? I believe I can still get my PPI mortgage payment as long as I sign on.

Also - sorry to hijack the thread but I am looking for part time work (approx 20 hours) as we have a 2yr old and a 6 yr old, the Jobcentre lady said the jobcentre will start putting pressure on me to take any full time job soon if I dont find a part time one, even though I have always worked part time after having both my children - is this the case ? I am horrified if it is, surely jobseeking is jobseeking. The DWP havent been terribly helpful

    Many thanks

You will not be entitled to IBJSA because of your dh's earnings. You should get wtc and ctc. If you are struggling with your mortgage then you should speak to your lender and you could take a payment holiday depending on your contract or change to an interest only mortgage.

If you are receiving Job Seekers Allowance (contribution based) only, then it will definitely stop after 6 months.
You can claim Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based). The first thing they will look at is how many hours per week you are working. For the customer it is a limit of 16 hours, for the partner it is a limit of 24 hours regardless of the amount of earnings.
If your partner is working less than 24 hours per week they would take his earnings into account less 10 pounds per week. You would also be able to claim for the mortgage but they would take the income from the mortgage protection into account.
If your partner is working over 24 hours per week you would not receive any JSA (IB) but could sign on for credits and to get your mortgage protection form signed.
You would still be expected to fulfill all the jobseeking requirements even though you would not be receiving JSA.

Fingers crossed you have a job soon so none of this will be relevant

    Good Luck

She will not get IBJSA, her dh earns too much at £16,000.

Although as you say she should still sign on the get her NI credits, but it is worth considering that she has HRP if she is named on the CB claim.
