i need a telling off and a kick up the bum please

Hi all

Well the new me is starting to slip I have started my new job and the same trap is waiting for me I think i am earning therfore I can start spending again. I know exactly what i am doing only trouble is I cant seem to get a grip of myself to stop doing it- okay I havent had the massive splurge that I would have done but I am still spending, I feel like the money is running away with itself even though it is not alot it is still going. I have so many things i need the money for but i feel totally out of control.

Please someone tell me off and remotivate me.

  • If you buy things you don't need, you end up with a house full of junk and a pocket full of debt.
Worst of all it makes you feel unhappy as you know you have failed. There you go bum kicked, now get back on track. :p

You have spotted that you are drifting back into old habits before any major damage has been done....well done. Now you can give yourself a sharp slap and get yourself back on the right track.

If you are worried that there money is 'disappearing' re-work your budget. Post your daily spends on this board. Set yourself 'rewards' for achieving certain targets in reducing your debt.

It will be a long haul, but you can do it.

When/how are you spending the money? If it's during the week, why not try leaving all your cards at home when you go to work? Put a tenner in your purse at the start of the week and keep that for emergencies only. That way the damage is limited - you can't spend what you haven't got with you! You won't be able to buy a top in your lunch hour or a magazine to read on the way to work because you know that you've only got 10 pounds for the whole week and you might need it if something goes wrong.

If you're spending money at the weekends, you'll need to change your habits/activities so that you're well out of the reach of temptation. For example, you could go for a walk instead of going to the shops to 'window shop'.

Good luck and keep your chin up!
  • cut all your cards up.......dont replace for six months take out a specific amount on friday evening put your cash card away until following friday as for credit cards i dont do them now but if you do only keep one with a low credit limit never increase it and be carefull or you could turn your current debt in to 100k plus very easily .....sobreing thought

Cut up your cash card and call the bank and tell them you lost it and need a new one.

Then in the next few days it takes them to send you one, get reminded of what it's like to have no money.

Sorry if that's too harsh :(
  • No that is good advice.

I have just reread some of the posts i have made today and my god what a miserable !!!!! I am today- it is because I am tired and cold and feelking really really sorry for myself I think I will go look in the mirror and give myself a darn fine talking to. If i dont i am seeing my best mate this aft and i am sure she will

Ok, instead of getting frustrated with yourself and feeling out of control, take some of that control back.

Have you done all the standard spreadsheets? used the snowball calculator etc?

Do you know where all your money is going?

Have you read the main thread on DFW on cutting back?

If you have done all these things and still dont feel in control, have a read through some of the threads about peoples stories. The good and the bad.

Once you feel you have a bit of perspective and control then you wont need to splurge. You'll be in control. You can do this!!

    Hiya Marie

I do remember that a couple of days ago ( im sure it was you ) that said that you'd gone into the shops you normally spend money in, picked up some stuff and put it back? Was that you? If it was, or if not...anyway....

All I have to say really is avoid the shops. Dont go anywhere near a shop unless there is anyway you can avoid it. I find sending OH with the exact money to the shop for the essential and then temptation is simply not in my way. Ive a day off today and I popped round the corner ( market was on) and I got 2 pairs of trousers for £2. Yes a bargain ( one is going on ebay- likely to make money off that) then went to get fags, anbd then bought a pack of biscuits. (50p) and some veg for tea ( and unneccsary eggs 60p)

Just today Ive spent 3.10 on stuff I didnt need, purely from going round the market. If Id stayed here, Id be better off.

This is me faling off the wagon a bit, and I wont be doing it again. If OH goes for carrots, thats all he comes back with.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

The way i handle work and not spending is simple

I keep all my change on the side at home and only take with me what i need for my dinner, otherwise my wallet is empty except for my bank card (for emergencies)

Im quite well disciplined as i have not yet took money out for pointless buys
