mortgage when moving jobs

Options
if you are living in one area but want to buy a house and get a mortgage in a different area what is the situation with jobs? will mortgage lenders accept a letter confirming employment and the salary in the area? I know there is a problem if there is a probationary period, but assuming there isn't one (my partner would actually be working for his uncles company) would this be ok? because we can't actually move up there 'til we have a house/mortgage so he can't start his job 'til then (he has a job where we currently live)
anyone got any idea? thanks :D

As far as I understand, if you have a contract for the job it should not be a problem. I am due to change my job in August (but staying in the same city) and that is what most of the lenders have said

Some lenders are more picky than others.

However, assuming the figures all stack up, you should be able to find lenders who will agree the mortgage based on your current employment status and the new contract.

Your best bet is to go via a broker before potentially damaging your credit file with multiples credit checks that could happen if you went direct to lenders - a broker will make sure you fit criteria and discussing deals before running any credit checks.

  • thanks so much for your replies! We did ask a mortgage advisor but they were soo vague about it. I fear we may have trouble as we are buying through the mychoice homebuy scheme too, and that limits who will give you a mortgage too I think. Eeek!

Have you had your funding agreed by the scheme? Has your letter come through?

Your choice will be limited, but you should still be ok on the mortgage front.

Check with the Housing Association that will be doing your MyChoice homebuy, you have to buy a property within a certain radius of where you work, if you are moving away from your area it would be a different HA from your local one.
