Tax Rebate....

Found out last month that I have been on the wrong tax code (BR) since starting my new job back in July 2006, this has now been changed to the correct code 647L.

Just sent off my 3 P60's for the past tax years with a cover letter explaining the situation by recorded delivery. The Tax Office tell me that it should take about 3 months to turn around, is this realistic? Or shouldn't I hold my breath?

Also would the 647L tax code apply for the 3 years since July 2006 or do they change every year? I've been trying to calculate how much I'm owed by using the 647L code on the online Tax Calculator

Would be grateful for anyones input.

HI, no, the 647L is for this year... Last year it was 603L... Details here:

How long it will take to turn around is difficult to say..
But 3 months does sound reasonably long enough for HMRC to do it!!:-))

Have they told you to send all 3 P60's? Normally you would only need to send 08-09 one.
3 mths sounds about right, they have sloads of post on hand. Don't waste your mney on recorded delivery, all post gets taken out of envelopes in the postroom and you have no way of proving what you sent them.
The code for 06-07 was 503L, so refund would be £1107 if you are a basic rate taxayer
Code for 07-08 was 522L, so refund would be £1045 if you are a basic rate taxpayer
Code for 08-9 was 603L, so refund would be £1207 if you are a BR taxpayer.
£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths
  • They told me a max 6 weeks! Last time it took 2 weeks but maybe I got lucky!
