Is my partner owed tax?

hi, i was wondering if anyone could help me, my partners tax code for 08/09 was 543L and he only earned just under £5300 but paid £560 in tax. Is he entitled to a rebate on any of this? If so how does he claim it back?
He is currently claiming JSA any help is appreciated

JSA is also taxable, but he may be due a refund. he will need to send his P60U (from the JC) to his tax office with a letter outlining all his jobs and periods of claim during the year and asking them to deal with the refund.

thanks, i was told because he is on income based it isnt taxable is that right?
  • The P60U should show the taxable amount of JSA - make sure you send that into the tax office with any P45s or P60s from his jobs from 07/08.

If you handed parts 2 and 3 of the P45 to job centre, you should still have part 1a. If not, the tax office should have received part 1...you could ring them and ask if they already hold those details/ HTH

No that's not right. It may not be TAXED, because it's less than the personal allowance, but it does count to the total taxable income for the year.
