thanks so much for your help George! I have written them a 4 page letter with offer of payment, telling them not to contact me by telephone and that they cant send a doorstep collector to me. am sure they wont be happy but at least theyre getting something.

    Emma,

Dont waste your money paying for a postal order or special delivery. Just ring them and ask them for their bank details. They will of course want you to pay them there and then, because that is their job. Dont discuss an amount just ask for their details. (Hide your number if you are concerned that they may call you.) Pay the £20 direct to their account using your debt reference number.

If they dont accept this, they may send a doorstep collector. Dont worry, this works to your advantage as you will be able to pay cash. They will ask you to pay upfront, but if you cant they will agree an installment plan. They will offer you the option to pay by direct debit as it saves them the hassle of collecting every week / every month.

Emma, I should add that I have worked in collections so know the system well. At the end of the day, they want the money and you can only pay what you have. Ignore the huff and puff, and let them be happy that they are receiving £20 from you.
