Employer won't pay for eye tests - where do we stand?

Hi

Me and a few of my work colleagues are needing our eyes tested and perhaps may need glasses to assist with our work.
We all work with VDUs constantly throughout the day, we do take breaks as and when but we understood that our employer has to pay or contribute towards the cost of our eye care. Anyway we have approached two of our company directors who have made in clear that under no circumstances do they, or never will, pay or put towards the cost of eye tests, glasses etc. It has to be paid out of our pocket.
Is this lawful? I have read that companies are obliged to pay and then I have read that they MUST pay. The last firm I worked for paid for everything as long as we produced receipts with no problems.
Can someone make it a bit clearer for us please?
Thanks from me and me work buddies
