I find fruit salad can be cheap or expensive depending on what its got in it. For a basic one I usually chop up whatever apples, pears, bananas, oranges etc that are hanging around in the fruit bowl. I also add some tinned fruit for example pineapple, peaches or frozen if I've got any. Add some lemon juice to stop certain fruits going brown then stir in some juice. I find its lovely if it can be made earlier in the day & allowed to 'stew' in the fridge. Yummy with ice cream or yoghurt

Pack of meriangue (sp?) nests - broken into chunks
Double cream - whisked until thick
Raspberries - squished slightly to release the juice
Chuck in a bowl together & roughly mixed
Sort of Eton Mess- tastes even better if the ingredients are yellow-stickered!:rotfl:

Actually one of my favourites are baked bananas, make a little paste of honey water (equal)., sprinkle in some cinnamon or mixed spice - what ever you have, and crumble over some old biscuit crumbs and bake in the oven. Chocolate makes a nice addition too  What ever you have. Lovely on their own, or with yoghurt or ice cream. Very filling too.
Get some lolly makers (something like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/money-saver-set-of-12-ice-lolly-moulds-dishwasher-safe_W0QQitemZ220398715116QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HGKitchen_SmallApp_RL?hash=item220398715116&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318Theyre even called moneysavers!
You can fill these with pureed fruit, yogurt, or natural yoghurt is nice blended with strawberries ,and you layer the mix in - comes up lovely. I can pm you the exact recipe if that would help. Make a batch and that would be a good last minute treat. Good for using up fruit going out of date. I wonder could you freeze smoothies? I dont see why not? I have also froze chocolate milkshake and normal dilutable juice as well. Yum. Perhaps would the kids make them if they get to eat them? Not sure of ages etc.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

Bread and butter pudding? I don't know how you're really supposed to make it, but I just use any old bread cut into triangles, in a dish with some dried fruit, whisk an egg with a bit of milk and pour over, cover in sugar, and stick it in the oven. Delicious!0
