2 weeks???? cor blimey! I was off for the same afternoon and back in !!! normal next day.. a tad sore but nothing more than a dull period pain!

Okay; someone's got to ask this question, so it might as well be me......

Where exactly was this wisdom tooth growing? :rotfl:

I knew as soon as i posted that there would be someone asking this!

errrrrrrr since i was sterilised, i sort of forgot what period pain was..... now its verbal poo! (( im only 33 so can remember vividly!))

Sorry to be predictable - but I was scared that no-one was going to say it!

I can't be scared with talk of sterilisations - I've had "the snip" and there is no pain like the pain of the anaesthetic needle..............

I feel quite poorly just reading this ...

But as others have said, she can't be forced to take annual leave in place of sick leave, however she may only receive SSP for the period of absence.

Id second that - they are pulling a crafty and its not very nice. She is only entitled to SSP (unless her company has a better sick policy) so she can have a 2 week sicky!! Once shes better she might want to look at a better company with a decent HR dept who actually care about its colleagues. Make sure you look after her!! Coffee, Dinner, Cakes once she can eat, Mags, Flowers etc etc etc :T:A:T

I think she needs to explain to her work what's going to happen. I expect their reaction was much the same as mine until I read how the tooth was positioned etc. My first thought was "Two weeks? For a wisdom tooth? She's taking the mick!"

Why would you or anyone else think that if there is medical evidence to support the need for time off though?

Because in the original post, no medical evidence was offered. And if GF has gone into work and said "I need to have a wisdom tooth out and doctor says I'll be signed off for two weeks" without explaining why, then the first reaction might well be "What? Two weeks? For having a tooth out?" Such is life.

So maybe a little more thorough explanation is called for. No confrontation, no threats, no worrying about what sort of pay. Just a better explanation so her boss doesn't think she's trying it on.

She can self cert for one week and if the doctor is signing her off for two weeks then he or she knows best!! Its not for anyone else to decide if two weeks is too long x Wish her luck
  • My dentist has been threatening me with this operation for years (I live in Spain, but visit him once a year when I visit the UK). He keeps asking me if I've had problems with the tooth, I always say no.....

Anyway, he told me that I would have to go into hospital, have a general anaesthetic, have two weeks off work (this was years ago, I'm retired now), and look as though I'd done ten rounds with Mike Tyson.

So no, the OP's sister will NOT be back at work the same day.

They can't make her use her holiday for sick leave. However, she may need to explain to them exactly what the operastion entails.

(And I'm going to tell him no this time too, even though I've had intermittent toothache....).

I'd say her work weren't originally aware of the severity of the op ( frightens me how serious getting a tooth out can be, never had one out in my life and very squeamish!) and would have possibly considered this to be elected time off rather than recommended by a doctor. In my experience, people I've worked with have actually chosen to take time off for ops, they could easily have been signed off by a doctor but have chosen not to - and that has not be whilst under any pressure whatsoever, it is through probably their own conscience. Me? My hols is the most precious thing!

2 weeks seems a lot, I've had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out in 2 lots and was only off a couple of days each time...

Anyway, back to the OP, if she is signed off by a medical practitioner as unfit to be at work then she is off sick and not on holiday, and shouldn't be required to take holiday
