Ds1 has his prom om 12th May but we need some advice from you lovely people.
We have a tuxedo and trousers so intead of hiring I am saving cash by taking it in for him.
The problem is he has never worn a suit in his life and he is happy with the tux but wants to add his own style to it by wearing a black shirt, red tie and braces. (the tux has red satin lining)
I will argue about the wearing of black leather converse with him later.
The dress code states formal but is this formal enough.
All views will be shown to him cos apparently I know nothing about anything

Hiya, when I went to my leaving prom, aged 16, we had people turn up in allsorts - some did full-on Ball Gowns and others just did party dresses. Guys did shirts and trousers to full-on Tuxs so I'd say it would be formal enough, as long as the location wasn't immenseley posh I'd even say that the converse would be ok.- It might not look particulary smart or formal that one could wear to a wedding/adult formal do but as a 16-y-o which I presume he'll be, it'd be a good way to put an individual twist on it.0

It's my sons prom too this year (dont they grow up too quickly), luckily we went to a family wedding last year where he was bought a suit because he was a groomsman, so thats what he is going to wear.
I think you son will look very dashing and a little bit different from the other tux boys if he wears the red and black, if he is anything like my ds who likes to be a little bit different from the norm I would let him wear the converse too .
.
To the rotweillers son - enjoy your prom :j, whatever you decide to wear.

I agree with minimacka,
I'm a teacher and we see allsorts at our proms each year. I think he'll look great and the converse will make the outfit!

My son went to his prom last year and refused to wear a tux. He wore a navy suit, brown and blue striped shirt and brown tie. His friends either went the whole hog in very formal wear or went creatively smart.
Your son would be fine in the outfit you describe.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
Thank you for the replies, I just had a bit of a problem with the definition of formal for a prom.
I am ok with the red and black and suggested he takes a pair of normal shoes with him (and leave in the car, if not needed) He is a rock guitarist and I thought I would have a bit of a problem getting him to wear a suit, but he is fine about that.
Tbh I love that he has his own style and he will look smart and original at the prom
I just have to ebay now for a black shirt, tie, and braces (maybe red socks and boxers as a joke):rotfl:0 -
I'd even go with the leather Converse...sounds cool!
My son has been to several proms this year and I've seen the photos, loads of guys like to try and look a bit different.

Wow his outfit sounds great and I agree go with the converse. My nephew wore braces with his tux and he looked fantastic.Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes0

Firstly, I got the date wrong, Prom is this thurs, so we had a mad rush about on sat to find red braces. then he decides he wants a red cravat rather than a tie.
Now I dont know about you lot but as far as i know the cravat was last sold in about 1968 (I was 3) lol.
Checked M&s, Debs everywhere including Moss Bros, so a compromise was made. I bought a red pashmina type shawl for £2 and cut it down.
Tonight he tried on the suit with the braces and cravat and looks Fab. I am so proud of him.
I am also proud of myself cos it was all done cheap, £7 (to clean suit), £4 shirt (ebay)£4 braces and £2 cravat:j0
