Cinders from the fire?

This may be a daft question but - are cinders from the fire OK to put on the compost heap?

What else can I do with them?

Thanks

  • I know that if you add a little salt and sprinkle them on icy paths it makes the ice melt

I'm afraid not. You should only put organic material on a compost heap - in other words something which has once grown. A reasonable amount of wood ash can be used, but the cinders of coal and smokeless fuels are not a good idea as they can contain a variety of toxins.

About the only use I can think of is for a traditional cinder path.

    Hope that's some help.

Messy, yes, but in the old thrifty days, my mum always used the ashes from our coal fire them in the cat's litter tray. She never bought cat litter until we got rid of the coal fire!

When you have a nice bright fire you can put the cinders back....they will keep the fire going for longer, just make sure that you have got rid of the ashes first
