Hi, I love Tess Gerritsen and Karin Slaughter and have found the following authors are very good if you like gripping, serial killer/crime,gruesome thrillers :

Alex Kava - Perfect Evil is the first in the series
Val McDermid - can be very gruesome
John Connolly - Every Dead thing is the first in the series, can be gruesome
Harlan Coben - excellent
Mary Higgins Clark - has written a huge number of crime/mystery books, sometimes a bit tame for me
Anne Frasier - Hush - Highly Recommended (American author) first in a series

I hope this helps, if I need some new reading matter I tend to look on Amazon and look at the personal lists people provide of their recommended crime books which has given me Anne Frasier and Alex Kava who I can highly recommend.

have you read the new one by tess gerritsen - vanishing act - i'm another avid fan and can also recommend Alex Kava - i particularly like at the stroke of madness.
