telephone line engineers - Edinburgh

Anyone any recommendations? For a house that is just being moved into.
The line is connected (or should be- we cant test it)- it just needs to be brought down from an attic and a socket put in so it can actually be used.

Extensions are a simple DIY job, have you got a master socket?
It looks like the one above.
If not you need BT to sort it out for you.

  • Thanks...unforunately i don't think there is anyone who is going to try DIY - the house is owned by an elderly relative who is not capable of even getting into the attic...
surely there must be a cheaper alternative to BT?

BT own the line up to and including the Master socket, it sounds as if this is'nt present.
Therefore it will be BT that have to sort it out.
Have you applied for a telephone service?
The only alternative would be Virgin Media if you are in a cabled area.
I don't understand how a telephone line would be terminated in an attic though, it doesn't make much sense.

If the line is active and in use then it must be terminated in a BT master socket of some sort.

Are you saying that it isnt and that instead,it is simply terminated with a junction box like in the good old days?

If that is the case then ring BT and tell them you dont have a master socket and could they kindly sort it (free of charge)
  • The previous owners of the house refurbished it completely - but stopped before they got round to putting in the phone line.
My relative has organised all his utilities with the Utilities Warehouse and had the impression that they would install the line - however think he was confused -we spoke to the agent today (relative currently in hospital but ok) and they said that the line was connected and broadband going live this week...
I am not sure what is there in the way of sockets...

Have found some potential telephone installing people in the phonebook so i guess we will try contacting them...and maybe asking BT too (although i presume they prefer you to be their customer)

And yes Virgin might have been a good solutions but it's too late now.

Thanks for that link although not sure I got what your main point is as too many pages to read...if it ends up being slightly more expensive than other utilities is doesnt matter too much.

Hopefully the guy who is installing the television aerial will sort the phone too.

why not get a double handset package of cordless phones. Only one handset needs to be attached to the phone line (in the attic?) and the other(s) just need a power socket. I have 4 phones in the house and only one plugged in a socket or do you need the socket for something else?
