going abroad on 26 dec got the flights but need car hire from geneva airport and companies asking for 300 quid for car hire / week

https://www.easycar.com claim to do Geneva from £17.76 but, surprise surprise, w/c 26 Dec comes out just over £300.
But from the French side of the airport it's only £180. Depends which country you are actually going to drive in, IIRC.0
