I am staying at my parents for the night amd whilst i'm here was trying to show my dad how to use his new mp3 player.
I installed the software and restarted comp, ok so far.
Then he said he wanted to put his own cds on the player, so I went to download.com to find a program to convert them. I installed WaveNet.
It said it was not compatible with windows98 and might not work fully, but i installed it anyway. However, when i restarted the comp i got an error message:
"Error loading Explorer.exe. You must reinstall Windows."
Then we i click ok it says "Error starting program....The MSVCRT.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL:RtIGetNtVersionNumbers."
On clicking ok nothing happens.
I tried safe mode but you get the same message. The message comes up when windows has loaded and an old background screen is up.
Its not looking good, can anyone help?
Thanks a lot

Until someone more knowledgeable comes along, I'll just suggest you try a "system restore". It's gotten me out of a few fixes!0

not on 98 you can't..
my mum had a similar problem with ME and had to get another hard drive as it was the only way i could restore her machine without losing all her data.0 -
If it is windows 98, Try going into safe mode with command prompt, and typing scanreg /restore..
It should give you a list of the last 5 backups of the registry, select the one with the nearest date before the mishap, then reboot...
If that doesn't fix it, then you may have overwritten some files (MSVCRT.DLL etc..), fortunately on Windows98, these are slightly easier to fix than XP..
Post back if it doesn't work..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

Well i've just noticed there is a review for the download which says:
DO NOT INSTALL if you are a Windows 98 user!!

Pros: The fact that it's FREE - I'm guessing that it works well with modern version of windows.
Cons: I know it's 2005, but if you are a Win98 user (like myself) this program will completely cripple your machine once installed/rebooted. It does WARN you that it's incompatible, but then says "We'll install anyway...". Once you install it asks you to reboot... when you reboot, you'll get a critical windows error - You may know the one, it says "Failed to load Explorer.exe - You must reinstall Windows.". Replacing MSVCRT.DLL and OLEAUT32.DLL (Windows\System) with original versions (boot to the command prompt) will solve the problem... but I guess that information won't be of much help to you if you've already installed this.
Is this any help?Proud to be a moneysaver! :cool:0 -
If you have the original 98 CD, (or loads of win98*.cab files somewhere on your hard disk), you can use expand to decompress the original files from the CD/Cabs, and copy them into windows\system.
But, you have to boot to command prompt to do it.
Or you could download from the webEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I don't seem to be able to go into safe mode with command prompt. If i press f5 for safe mode i just get to the error message. However it does seem to get quite far before the error, ie it shows command prompts etc beforehand.
I think i am just going to have to leave it for now and get my boyfriend to fix it in a couple of weeks. Parents are gonna have to learn to use the other computer.
I was only trying to help! :embarasse
Thanks for all the advice, i'm sure i'll be back at some point.Proud to be a moneysaver! :cool:0 -

Use a windows 98 bootable CD to bypass your hard-disk booting and then you will be on the command prompt. You can replace the MSVCRT.DLL to its original version only from a windows 98 installation. if u get to command prompt and you are unable to run any commands this is likely because they are not on your ram drive or current path. Try going into system32 directory in windows and then run the registery restore as told in above post.
1. Your first option should be to restore registry to the date when this program was not installed.
2. Remove all the extra hardware and just keep mouse keyboard and monitor attached. Then press F8 and select step by step configuration. Do not load any drivers and you will get command prompt. then replace the file MSVCRT.DLL from original windows 98 installation CD or where 98 is installed previously.
Hope this will help.0
