do i need to verify if a debt has been sold on to a dca?

One of my creditors, Egg, have passed on my debt to Moorcroft debt recovery. What is the usual procedure - do I need to phone Egg to check if they have indeed passed on the debt (all the details seem correct) or do I just reply directly to Moorcroft? They say that all payments must be made payable to them (Moorcroft)? Any advice appreciated.

Have the (both egg and Moorcroft) verified in writing ? If not, you always need to verify if a company has the right to collect money from you. If you search on the forum for posts by member 'Harassed', he has posted sample letters to send to DCAs for them to confirm they own the debt.
  • I think egg did write to say they may pass on the debt to a third party but not who... (so many letters from 13 creditors, lost track). Letter from Moorcroft states that Egg have instructed them to collect the debt. But thanks for that, have found the letter you mentioned (thanks, harassed, btw), and will send this anyway to be on the safe side, and will send my pro rata payment direct to Egg for this month. This was for an egg loan, I also have an egg card and strangely, egg card have accepted my proposed payment for the next 6 months, so my loan being with the same company, i would have expected them to accept the reasonable pro rata amount for the loan also, but that's how it goes, I s'pose, you win some, you lose some.
