Cleaning cream carpet

Is there any cheap way to clean dark smudges out? Sadly I tend to troop in without remembering to remove boots. It's a cheap carpet, and as soon as I have my damp proofing and heating done (FINALLY after six months saving!) it's going, so I can't really justify hiring a carpet cleaner.

Not sure if this if the right thread to ask or not, but would adding 1tsp/tbsp of soda crystals to a carpet cleaner's cleaning soloution help? Or would it damage the carpet?
Everybody is equal; However some are more equal than others.
  • I wouldn't add soda crystals to your carpet cleaning machine, but i've found using white vinegar instead of expensive carpet cleaning solutions is just as effective! :money:
  • I have found Flash Clean and care with Bicarb (blue fluid) it is not for carpets or upholstery but for all surfaces steel enamel & aluminium. I always tend to just try stuff from the cupboards. I noticed one day when I poured some on a cloth it made a very visible clean patch. So now the world is my oyster I use it all over. It really is like the cillet bang/ vanish advert it just disappears. I have used it on my cream carpets, and my sofa.
  • I have a beige carpet and two very muddy footed teenagers. Last night I went round with a sponge and the famous stardrops mix (1part stardrops, 1 part white vinegar, 1 part water) in a squirty bottle and everything came straight off, no bother. Honest, you can use it for EVERYTHING!!!
