The UK national debt is 800 billion dollars, about 1/10 of the US figure.

IMO the national debt is not a problem other than requiring the taxpayer to pay interest on it. The debt is by and large owed to wealthy individuals, pension funds, and other institutions, within the UK - and the interest is paid by taxation on largely the same people and organisations.
