Recieved a P60U from job centre

in Cutting tax
I was a self employed sub contractor but have been out of work and been on the jobseekers for over 12 months now, i was confused as to whether i would still be required to fill in a self assessment form for a tax rebate and today i recieved a P60U.
Im not completly sure if this form just states how much i've been given in benifits for this tax year or whether it's money im eligible for a tax rebate.
Can someone clear up what the p60U is for and what i should do with it?
Thanks, Leon.

The P60 is just your year end earnings isnt it (I've not come across the U before so it may be something different) ~ what are the figures and dates on it?:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! U means unemployed.
1041 seems a bit low0 -
So the P60U is just a record of how much ive been paid in benefits? Am i still liable to fill out the self assessment even though ive been unemployed?0

Have they sent you a notice asking you to fill out a self-assessment form? I'd be inclined to ring HMRC and ask them. But if you do fill out the form, there shouldn't be much to put on it and no tax to pay, so to be on the safe side if it was me I'd probably do one anyway, then you can't get them coming back in a few years time complaining that they didn't have a return for this year.0

You should not get involved in the SA system unless you need to self assess, ie you are a higher rate taxpayer with additional tax to pay on investments, you are self employed, have income from letting or other incoem to declare. If you just want a refund of tax, all you need do is write to HMRC giving them details of all your employers for the year and asking them to look into it.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

As you say you are a self employed sub contractor, have you filled in Self Assesment forms before ?, if so did you say that you had stopped being a Self Assesment case?, if not then you should have received a "notice to file" letter a few weeks ago, saying you need to fill in a tax return for the last financial year, (08/09) On this form just fill in the detailsof your income and state that you are no longer self employed and then they will stop sending you the tax returns. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0
